When O’Brien Ornamental Iron moved to Watertown in 2022, we were able to add onsite powder coating. The dimensions of our oven are 10’ tall x 10’ wide x 20’ long. Maintaining our own powder coating facility allows us to effectively manage quality control, offer a wider array of colors, and complete projects in a timelier manner. Powder coating boasts many benefits over oil-based enamel painting:
- Greater gloss retention
- More resistant to chipping, scratching & fading
- A thicker, longer lasting, durable finish
- An unlimited range of colors, glosses & textures
- Increased weather-ability
- Emits zero to near zero volatile organic compounds (VOC’s)
- Low to no emissions making it an environmentally sound process
The powder coating finishing process begins with each piece being sandblasted, cleaned, and dried. Electrostatically charged powder is evenly applied to all sides of the surface. First a zinc-rich primer is applied, then the finished color. Each coat is cured in a 400° oven.

Touch up cans are available for most colors at $20 each. Shawn O’Brien has color samples and color charts that he brings to on-site appointments. You are also welcome to visit our shop in Watertown.
